Acceptable use policy
CurlShot opens a real browser on a page for you. That is useful, and it can be misused. These rules say what the service may not be used for. They are part of the terms of service.

1. Who this applies to
These rules apply to everyone who uses the service: account holders, anyone using their keys, and visitors who use the free tool on the site without an account. You are responsible for every request made with your keys.
2. Content you may not capture or create
Do not use the service to capture, render, store or distribute:
- sexual content involving minors, in any form. We report it to the authorities and close the account;
- content that is illegal where you are, where we are, or where the people it concerns are;
- content that infringes someone's copyright, trademark or other rights, or that you have no right to copy;
- private information about a person captured or published without a lawful reason, or content used to stalk, harass, threaten or expose someone;
- content that promotes or organises violence or terrorism;
- malware, or pages built to deliver it.
3. Things you may not do
Do not use the service to:
- deceive people: build or test phishing pages, impersonate a person or organisation, or present an image rendered from your own HTML as a genuine screenshot of what someone else published;
- get around access controls: capture pages behind a login, a paywall or a technical barrier without the permission of whoever controls them, or use credentials that are not yours to use;
- reach where you should not: private networks, internal services or cloud metadata addresses, or probe for them, whether directly, through redirects or through scripts you inject;
- attack or overload our systems or anyone else's: denial of service, port or vulnerability scanning, click fraud, fake traffic or automated form submission;
- break privacy law: collect personal data on a scale or in a way the law does not allow, or build profiles of people from the pages you capture;
- send spam, or produce material for it;
- run code for other ends: use injected scripts to mine cryptocurrency, relay traffic or do anything other than prepare the page for capture;
- get around your plan: evade rate limits, open several free accounts, share one account to avoid buying a plan, or abuse the referral programme;
- resell raw access to the API as a competing screenshot service without a written agreement with us;
- interfere with the service: test its security without our written permission, or try to reach other customers' data.
Do not rely on the service where a failure could cause death, injury or serious damage. It is not built for that.
4. Respect the sites you capture
- You are responsible for having the right to capture a page and to use the result. A site's own terms may forbid automated visits.
- Do not send so many requests to one site that you burden it. Use the cache; it exists for this.
- If the owner of a site tells you to stop capturing it, stop.
- We may block captures of a site whose owner asks us to, and of sites that are a frequent target of abuse.
5. If you build on the API
If your own product lets other people make screenshots through our API, you must hold them to rules at least as strict as these, be able to stop a user who breaks them, and act when we pass on a complaint. What they do with your keys counts as done by you.
6. Report abuse or illegal content
If you believe the service is being used against these rules, for example a page of yours is being captured against your will, or a file made with the service is illegal, tell us through the contact form (choose "Report abuse or a legal complaint") or at [email protected]. Reporting is free and needs no account. Please include:
- the address of the file or page concerned, or the site being captured, as exactly as you can;
- why you consider it illegal or against these rules;
- your name and email address, so we can answer (not needed for reports of child sexual abuse material);
- a statement that you believe in good faith that what you tell us is accurate and complete.
We confirm that we received a report, look at each one in a timely, careful and objective way, and tell you what we decided and why. This is also the single point of contact for authorities of the European Union and its member states, and for users, under the EU Digital Services Act. Write to us in English.
7. Copyright complaints
If a file made or stored with the service infringes your copyright, send a notice through the same channel with: your contact details; the work you say is infringed; the address of the material; a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised by the owner, an agent of the owner or the law; a statement that the notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner; and your signature, which may be typed.
When a notice is valid we remove or block the material and tell the customer concerned, who may answer with a counter-notice explaining why the removal was a mistake. Accounts that infringe repeatedly are closed. Knowingly sending a false notice can make you liable for the damage it causes.
8. What we do about it
We do not review requests before they run, and we do not generally monitor what customers capture. Automated checks refuse requests to private networks and limit how fast an account may send requests. When a report or our own checks show a breach, we may refuse requests, delete stored files, block a target site for an account, suspend a key or an account, or close the account, depending on how serious the breach is, whether it was deliberate and whether it was repeated.
We tell the account holder what we did and why, as set out in the terms of service, unless the law forbids it. If you think a decision was wrong, whether we acted against your account or decided not to act on your report, write to us through the contact form or [email protected] within six months and a person who was not involved in the first decision will review it. You also keep your right to go to court.
We cooperate with lawful requests from authorities, and report to them what the law requires us to report.
9. Changes
We may update these rules as new kinds of misuse appear. The date at the top shows the latest version, and significant changes are announced as described in the terms of service.
